How to Spot a Great Leader in Under One Minute
Five fast ways to spot a great leader
I was thinking about our conversation the other day. About how tricky it can be to recognise real leadership, especially in fast-paced workplaces where everyone looks confident, busy, and “in control.” It’s not always obvious who the true leaders are.
So I wanted to share something quick with you. There are actually a few subtle signs that reveal genuine leadership almost instantly. You can spot most of these in under a minute.
Here are the five I always look for:
1. They Take Responsibility, Not Credit
A great leader gives credit away when things go well and takes responsibility when things go wrong. If someone constantly blames others or dodges accountability, they’re not showing leadership. They’re protecting their ego.
People who own outcomes (good or bad) are usually the ones you can trust.
2. They Listen More Than They Speak
Real leaders listen with intention. You’ll notice they ask thoughtful questions, stay curious, let others finish speaking, and take a moment before responding.
Poor leaders dominate conversations.
Great leaders encourage them.
You can almost feel the difference.
3. They Stay Calm Under Pressure
If you want to see someone’s true character, watch how they behave when things go wrong.
A strong leader remains steady. They don’t panic, lash out, or blame. They focus on solutions.
That sense of calm creates confidence for everyone around them.
4. They Lift Others Up
One of the clearest signs of leadership (even without a title) is how someone treats the people around them.
Look for those who freely give praise, help others grow, mentor without expecting anything, defend their teammates, and encourage potential. These are leaders long before they’re formally recognised as such.
Anyone can compete.
Leaders elevate.
5. They Act With Integrity
Integrity is non-negotiable. A genuine leader keeps their promises, makes fair decisions, avoids gossip, tells the truth, and chooses the right thing even when it’s hard or inconvenient.
People naturally follow those they trust.

You really don’t need hours of observation to spot a great leader. If you look for responsibility, calmness, integrity, genuine listening, and how they treat others, leadership becomes easy to identify.
These qualities show up consistently no matter the industry, team size, or environment.
